It looks like Sheen's personal battles have turned into an issue about press freedom. Entertainment website RadarOnline.com and tabloid National Enquirer have reportedly refused any requests from Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to access materials they could use in their investigation into the Two and a Half Man actor.

The LAPD reportedly served a search warrant on Tuesday to the New York headquarters of American Media Inc., the parent company of RadarOnline and the Enquirer.

The LAPD's request comes after RadarOnline and the Enquirer published an audio of a man, alleged to be Sheen, saying he would like to see a former fiancee "have her head kicked in."

Enquirer and RadarOnline, however, are adamant that they would neither submit to the request of police authorities nor reveal who their source is, according to Reuters.

Dylan Howard, editor in chief of the Enquirer, explained that state and federal laws protect media organizations spreading "newsworthy" information from getting served search warrants.

"We do believe that a judge did issue this order against the law, and that's why we will not be complying with its order," Howard said in an interview.

He, however, urged the LAPD to conduct further investigations to "uncover the evidence" themselves.

Enquirer and RadarOnline published a news piece regarding the audio at the end of March, saying an unnamed former lover of Sheen recorded it. But the two publications did not publish the audio. RadarOnline named Scottine Ross as the one who made the recording.

Ross filed a lawsuit against Sheen in December last year claiming the comedian assaulted her and did not inform her that he has HIV.

In an interview with People, Scottine said she fears for her because Sheen wants to kill her.
