China on Sunday started working on Asia's longest subway station in Shenzhen.

Pinghu Central Station, which is located in the northern part of Subway Line 10, will extend up to 29.2 kilometers stretching south to the Futian Checkpoint station, which is near Hong Kong in the far south area. The two-story station is designed to be 22 meters in width and 170 meters in length, according to a representative from the construction unit of China Railway Construction Corporation.

The reasons for constructing such a long train is to cater the anticipated 20 percent influx of the number of passengers soon and to accommodate between six to eight carriages of train extension.

Pinghu Central Station will reportedly undergo two phases of construction, within a total time frame of 54 months, the spokesperson from the construction unit said. The new station is expected to start operation in 2020.

Currently, Shenzhen has nearly 190 km of operating subway line and more than 200 km under construction. This year, expansion continues as three subway lines will undergo trial operation, while construction works will commence in four.

Given its improved subway network, Shenzhen's Pinghu Central Station will soon become an important transport hub particularly among tourists and travelers.

Earlier this year, the creation of public utility services like light rails and subways was suggested to remedy the growing problem of traffic congestion and to meet people's demand. According to Shi Xiangyang, member of the 12th Beijing Chinese's Political Consultative Conference, such utilities will greatly offer comfort and convenience to citizens.
