Logitech has announced its acquisition of Jaybird, the company behind fitness-focused wireless earbuds and trackers, for $50 million in cash.

The acquisition is focused mainly on the growth of audio and music-listening products of Logitech. The move is also being speculated to help the company be a frontrunner in the race for wireless and USB powered audio products.

“The way we consume music has changed radically over the past decade and will continue to do so as we look to the future. Music now goes with us everywhere and as both a shared or solitary experience, it can be integrated into pretty much all aspects of our daily lives thanks to the type of products that both UE and Jaybird have been inventing and commercializing over the last few years,” said Logitech senior vice president of music Rory Dooly in a press release.

Logitech has agreed to buy Jaybird for $50 million, with an extra $45 million coming through if growth goals are met in the coming two years. Logitech and Jaybird will continue to operate under their own brand names. The Jaybird team will be able to design and release its own products in the same way that it has been doing all along.

The deal is subject to the standard conditions and approval process, but is expected to finalize in the coming weeks. The acquisition aims to combine Jaybird’s marketing and sporting expertise with Logitech’s previous experience in engineering and design.

Jaybird makes Bluetooth-enabled wireless earbuds like the X2 and a fitness tracker called Reign. The company hit on a great idea of making products for people actively engaged in sports and who wanted music to power their passion for their sport.

Logitech has also acquired Ultimate Ears in 2008 and released a variety of headphones and portable speakers under the UE label. Logitech is known for creating products such as mouse and accessories like keyboards, focusing on audio gear in the recent years.
