Japanese carmaker Toyota has issued a recall order for its 2015 Camry and Avalon due to issues about the airbags not deploying as expected. The recall was due to airbag defects, but reports claim that it does not involve Takata airbags, which is also facing serious recall problems due to faulty airbags.

Toyota said that 16,800 units of the 2016 Avalon and 41,630 units of the 2016 Camry sedans will be recalled. While most new cars are equipped with sensors that can detect whether there is a person sitting in the front seat in order to properly deploy airbags in case of a crash, Toyota is recalling some of its cars due to a recently discovered glitch that renders the system inoperable.

Toyota said that the front passenger seats classification system may have received improper calibration while the cars were in the manufacturing process. The carmaker added that these sensors rely on the weight of the occupant in order to activate or deactivate the front passenger air bag system.

Due to faulty calibrations, the front passenger airbag and the front passenger knee bag may not deploy as originally designed. Toyota said that this only occurs under some conditions. Airbags not properly deploying during a crash increases the risk of injury to the passengers and may even cause death.

Toyota stated that the problem is with the calibration of the sensors and not with the airbag itself. The carmaker said that the fix will only involve a simple recalibration of the occupant-classification module.

Toyota said that it will notify all affected customers via a first-class mail. The recall has not yet started since Toyota is still in the process of informing its customers.

When the recall is eventually issued, affected vehicles should be brought to a dealer in order to do the proper recalibration. While Toyota is yet to confirm whether it will cover the recalibration fee, in most cases where the carmaker initiates the recall, the recalibration fee is usually waived.
