Empty Bed Made into Giant Hive by over 5,000 Wasps

Wasps make strange bedfellows, literally.

A Brit found out first hand wasps have a liking for an empty bed which, in this case, the insects converted into an enormous hive.

The unidentified Brit said he made the startling discovery upon visiting his mother's infrequently used home. He opened the door to one of the room's in his mother's house to be welcomed by a huge cloud of wasps.

The wasps had converted one of the beds into the room into a huge hive.

An exterminator called to get rid of the "bed wasps" said he'd never seen anything like it in his 45 year career. He believes the wasps got into the room through an open window

He added there must have been around 5,000 wasps and said the job of chasing away the stinging insects was indeed challenging.

He said nest was about 3-1/2 feet long. The wasps apparently ate parts of the mattress so they could make their nest in the bed. The exterminator estimated the nest had probably been there for months.

More astounding, he said the wasps continued to build the nest as he stood there watching over the nest.

Dressing up as if he were a spaceman to protect himself from stings, the exterminator tried to destroy as many wasps as he could. He estimated that there were over 700 queen wasps in the hive.

He said the biggest nest he exterminated before was the size of a baseball or a tennis ball. This bed nest was the largest he'd seen and destroyed in his career.

Pest controllers were also called in to spray the area until it was declared safe from wasps.
