Nanodiamonds Found in America and Europe

Nanodiamonds

Diamonds are forever.

That's what scientists found out as they investigate nanodiamonds, a material produced from collision of comets in outer space.

The diamonds were found in the Younger Dryas Boundary (YDB) that can be found in North America and Western Europe.

Researchers believe that the nanodiamonds were caused by a cosmic impact that happened in the Younger Dryas Period 12,800 years ago.

The Younger Dryas period otherwise known as the Big Freeze was theorized as the cause of collapse of the North American ice sheet.

James Kennett said that they identified a thin layer of nanodiamonds which researchers believe was a  product of a cosmic collision.

He explained that they found glassy and metallic materials in YDB formed in temperatures with 2200 degree Celcius, which were not caused by wildfires, volcanic eruptions and meteor impacts.

Aside from North America and Western Europe, scientists found nanodiamonds in the Middle East, Santa Rosa Island and San Miguel Island.

Researchers found different forms of nanodiamonds like cubic and hexagonal crystals in the YDB layer.

Kennett explained that the unique formation of the nanodiamonds was caused by variation in temperature, pressure and oxygen caused by the collision.

Kennett said that YDB covers more than 10 percent of the planet which showed that it has a major cosmic impact in the galaxy.

He also said that nanodiamond data provides an isochron, a certain initial condition in space that can run in a fixed period.

Kennett believe that their findings challenge existing paradigms like impact dynamics, archeology, paleontology and paleoceanography that were affected with the cosmic impact.
