Music legend Prince, otherwise known as 'The Artist Formerly Known as Prince,' passed away on Thursday in his Minnesota home. He was 57 years old.

Prince Rogers Nelson created the Minneapolis sound and was popularly recognized for battling creative freedom in the music industry. Minneapolis sound was a blend of pop and new wave in the music genre.

Yvette Noel-Schure, Prince's publicist, confirmed that the iconic performer passed away in his Paisley Park residence on Thursday morning. The police revealed that they are conducting an investigation into his death.

Following the singer's unexpected death, a lot of fans and fellow celebrities have expressed their grief on social media. Some referred to Prince's death to a dove's cry, a reference to one of his hit songs.

Actor Samuel L. Jackson said he was devastated when he learned of the pop icon's death. Jackson defined his death as a 'Massive Loss.'

Singer Katy Perry expressed her grief through Twitter, stating that the 'world lost a lot of magic.'

Famous 80s singer Boy George called it the 'worst day ever' when Prince passed away.

Prince earned seven Grammy Awards, along with 30 nominations. Prince's five singles topped the Billboard charts and 14 songs made it to the Top 10 upon its release.

Prince also earned an Oscar award for the best original song score for 'Purple Rain.'

Prince's preference for story-songs, which depict kinkiness, earned him the moniker, 'His Royal Badness.'

The singer's legacy lives through his works on film, movies, politics and sports.

Prince wrote a Minnesota Vikings anthem titled 'Purple and Gold' that was meant to inspire his home team. Prince was also the chosen performer during the Super Bowl half-time in 2007.
