Robert Downey Jr: Iron Man Joins Marvel's 'Spider-Man' Reboot

It has been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will feature in Sony Pictures' upcoming web-slinging adventure Spider-Man: Homecoming as Iron Man a.k.a. Tony Stark.

The 51-year-old actor will star alongside Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the film. This won't be the first time the two will share screen space, Iron Man and Spider-Man team up in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6.

Official character descriptions for Civil War reveal that Tony Stark enlists the help of Peter Parker to join him in his fight against Captain America (Chris Evans) and and Homecoming is likely to focus on the relationship between the two Marvel superheroes. Downey is also set to reprise his role as the Marvel Comics character in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2.

The Spider-Man reboot is being directed by Jon Watts based on a script penned by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. Kevin Feige and Sony's Amy Pascal will serve as producers on the project, which revolves around Peter Parker's life as a high school teenager.

Spider-Man: Homecoming also stars Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Disney channel star Zendaya as a character named Michelle, Tony Revolori, who plays Peter Parker's friend Manuel and One Life to Love star Laura Harrier, whose role is not yet known.

Michael Keaton was being eyed to play the villain in the film, however there are reports that early negotiations fell through and the Birdman actor pulled out of the project.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is slated to hit theaters on July 27, 2017.
