Caroline Wozniacki defeated Maria Sharapova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, en route to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows New York on Sunday afternoon.

The tenth-seeded broke the French Open champion Sharapova early in the first set as the Russian committed multiple errors, returning the ball into the net.

The 24-year-old Wozniacki held both of her serves to jump ahead 3-0 and never looked back to claim the first set 6-4.

The fifth-seeded Sharapova came back in the second set as she broke Wozniacki twice to take the lead 4-0 and held serve to win the set but Wozniacki would not be denied as she rallied in the third set to defeat the 27-year-old Sharapova.

This is Wozniacki's first quarter-finals appearance since the Australian Open in 2012.

"It means a lot to me," said Wozniacki. "The season for me has been a little bit up and down, and it's so nice to kind of start feeling I'm playing the way I want to."

Wozniacki will face in the quarterfinals Sara Errani, who earlier ended the winning streak of qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0.

The half of the reigning Wimbledon women's doubles champion mustered all her will against the 32-year-old Croatian as she stayed calm and collected throughout the match.

The Italian got the better end of the match as she limited herself to nine unforced errors compared to the 69 of Lucic-Baroni. Errani lost the second set due to the fierce serves of the Croatian but eventually led to her doom as she committed a total of six double faults followed by a series of unforced errors.

"She served very strong," Errani said. "Is the kind of player I don't like to play too much, so I just tried to be very focused every point."

The 13th seed Errani's best performance at the tournament was in 2012 when she reached the semi-finals and lost to eventual winner Serena Williams.
