Facebook Plans to Create Standalone Camera App

Facebook standalone camera app is still on its early stages and could potentially never see a release should it be shelved.

(Photo : Reuters) Facebook is attempting to make viewing live-streamed videos on its platform more interesting.

A team of Facebook engineers is developing a stand-alone camera app with a big live-streaming component.

The camera prototype is also similar to disappearing photo app Snapchat. It would open straight into a camera to promote immediate capturing and posting of photos and videos, as well as letting users stream through Facebook Live. This new camera project is still on its early stages and could potentially never see a release should it be shelved.

Reports indicate that this new plan of Facebook is to engage with the users. The company wants to ensure that its users are logging into their profiles as often as possible. It is also intended to encourage creation. The content could then be shared to Facebook or its other properties, including Instagram.

The plan was also attributed to the decline of original post sharing in Facebook yearly. Previous reports say that Facebook users do not post many status updates, photos, or original media on the social network as they used to, contributing a 21 percent decline for original media.

Facebook's last Camera app was introduced in 2012 after it has acquired Instagram, and replicated much of the functionality of that popular photo sharing platform. Its icon closely resembled that of Apple's own native camera app in an effort to get people to use it as their primary photo-taking platform. But the company eventually included most of the app’s features into the main Facebook app. It shut down Camera from the App Store in May 2014, two years after its release.

In addition, Facebook also announced that it would reorganize its news feed, promising to present more relevant articles to the users and would spend time reading them.
