Ellar Coltrane: It was Confronting to Watch Himself Age

'Boyhood' star Ellar Coltrane says it was a confronting experience after finally watching the film which was filmed with the same cast for a twelve-year period.

Richard Linklater, the creator of the film, has decided to make a movie that revolves around the coming-of-age story of a boy. Other than that, he has also decided to film the movie with the same cast over the course of 12 years.

The movie, 'Boyhood', revolves around the story of a boy named Mason who has been portrayed by Ellar Coltrane since he was given the role in 2002. In the story, he has a sister named Samantha who will be played by Lorelei Linklater, Richard Linklater's daughter.

On the other hand, the role of their parents would be played by Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette.

According to Ellar Coltrane, he has never watched any video of himself playing the role of Mason through the 12 years that he had been filming it until recently. He has finally seen himself as Mason on screen and he described the experience 'confronting'.

He said that his initial perception of the film was just seeing himself age over the years, but it had become a turning point in his life to see himself aging. He described the experience as something emotional.

However, Ellar Coltrane also said that it was easier for him to watch the production. "There is something about seeing it all together in context that is comforting," he said.

The young actor, now 19 years old, said that the movie has become a part of him and sharing it with other people feels strange but surreal.

Asked whether filming the movie restricted his lifestyle, he said that it wasn't like that at all as he was free to experiment on his look over the years.

The young actor only has praises for Richard Linklater whom he had worked with. Linklater directed movies including 'School of Rock', 'Bernie' and 'Waking Life'.

'Boyhood' has been released in the US last July 11.
