Doctors said he wouldn't make it pass 12 weeks, but Trevor Judge Waltrip, the boy who was born without a brain, defied all odd and survived until the age of 12. He passed away peacefully last Monday.

Born on Christmas Eve 2001, Waltrip was nothing less than a miracle. The little boy was born with an extremely rare condition called hydranencephaly.

Hydranencephaly is a cephalic or head condition wherein the cerebral hemispheres of the brain are absent, in varying degrees, and the empty cranial cavity fills up with cerebrospinal fluid.

The congenital disorder occurs when there is damage or an abnormal development of the nervous system during the early development stages of a fetus. Damage or abnormality may occur either through genetics or maternal infection, exposure to radiation or drug intake.

Currently, there is no cure for the condition.

Waltrip was able to breathe on his own and respond to stimuli, but he was blind and was unable to communicate verbally.

In 2003, his mother Elizabeth shared, "He's so alert and hates to be alone. He'll sense that, too."

Waltrip was cared for and looked after by his loving family, physicians and therapists who had to feed him through a tube.

When Waltrip turned 17 months, his doctor, Larry Daniels, shared that they were very surprised because babies with the condition generally don't live that long.

At 12 years, Waltrip certainly defied science.

In 2005 his mother recounted, "I look at it like he's here for a reason and I thank God everyday for it." Elizabeth said that her son had gained weight and even developed 15 teeth, "he does bite, so he does know what he's doing."

In an effort to get support and more information about Trevor's condition, Elizabeth sought a support group for parents who also have babies with the same condition.

The Waltrips are currently seeking for donations to help cover the costs of Trevor's funeral. Donations can be deposited to any Chase Bank branch under the "Trevor Judge Waltrip Donation Account."

Funeral services began on Saturday, August 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel, 2500 Southside Drive.
