Google and HP recently unveiled the newest member of the Chromebook line of devices, the Chromebook 13. At the same event and without much publicity, Google silently announced that it is stopping the sale of the 2015 Chromebook Pixel which has a price tag of 6,470 yuan ($999).

The 2015 Chromebook Pixel is only available via Google Store. This means that interested buyers can no longer get their hands on the device, since the base model is not available anywhere anymore.

When it was first released, the 2015 Chromebook Pixel sports an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 32GB solid-state drive for storage, and a touchscreen display. The device was an immediate success to tech enthusiasts but fail to capitalize in the market due to its quite hefty price tag. The only Chromebook Pixel model available today costs $1,299 and sports an Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 64GB solid-state storage drive.

Filling the void left by the 2015 Chromebook Pixel is the new Chromebook 13. It sports an Intel Core M processor, 16GB of RAM, 32GB of storage space, a touchscreen display and a significant cut on its price tag, which only costs $499 for the entry level model.

A Google spokesperson told Venture Beat, "The 8GB is out of stock but the 16GB is still available for sale."

The base model of the new Chromebook 13 has 4GB worth of RAM. However, an 8GB and 16GB RAM configurations are also available. According to Ars Technica, processor variants include a wide range of Skylake Core M chips.

Taking out the $999 Pixel follows the Nexus 9 tablet which is slowly running out of stock in Google Store at the start of the week. Some tech analysts said that removing the $999 Chromebook Pixel from the market does make sense since, when compared to newer devices in the Chromebook line, the device is seriously getting outpaced.
