The Houston Rockets are reportedly going after Indiana Pacers head coach Frank Vogel in the offseason to fortify their bench leadership after another disappointing finish for the two-time NBA Champions.

Houston is currently under the tutelage of interim head coach J. B. Bickerstaff after he replaced Kevin McHale when the latter was fired in November of last year. The 37-year-old Bickerstaff had a 37-34 record since he took over from the former Boston Celtic standout, who had been the Rockets' chief bench tactician for the previous four seasons.

The Rockets advanced to the playoffs under their former assistant coach amidst an inconsistent campaign, but was eliminated by defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors in the first round, 4-1.

Bickerstaff always knew that he will not be the long term solution of the franchise in the said position and so the hunt for their new coach had already begun.

Rumors have emerged that the Indiana Pacers are not going to renew the contract of its head coach, Frank Vogel, when it expires this June and so the former Celtics, 76ers, and Pacers assistant is said to be the number one target of the Rockets this summer.

Fansided noted that Vogel is considered as "one of the best coaches in the NBA, which makes this a massive development".

The report also said that Houston is "in dire need of a head coach who can convince James Harden and company to play defense" and so Vogel, one of the best defensive minds in basketball today, should fit perfectly within the Rockets' objectives.

Meanwhile, ESPN reported that Vogel's future in Indiana is "uncertain", according to team president Larry Bird.

"I don't know what's going to happen," said Bird. "Frank's a great guy. He's going to be fine no matter what happens. If he's back, he'll be fine here. If he's not, he's not. We'll see."

Vogel finished the season with the Pacers holding a 45-37 record, enough for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They were eliminated by the Toronto Raptors in seven games.

Vogel had been Indiana's head coach for seven seasons now and has an overall record of 250-181 for a 58 percent winning mark in the regular season. He is 31-30 in the playoffs.
