Marvel comic's questionable mix of C-level comic stars has "just beat out" the studio's top A-listers. Friday morning, 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' secured its position as the top-grossing movie of 2014 surpassing the gallant efforts of 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier.'

One month after 'The Guardians' release, the space-adventure blockbuster maintained its top-spot-position on the first day of the holiday weekend, raising an additional US$3.8 million to its reserves elevating the domestic total earnings up to just shy of $263 million. This total is approximately US$2.4 million more than its rival Captain America 2.

Some speculate that 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' continues to dominate simply for the fact that it has "weak end-of-summer competition."

The Horror film 'As Above, So Below', set in the labyrinthine Parisian catacombs, stepped into second place bringing in a sum of US$3.2 million.

Regardless of the fact that some are saying, just like the characters, this movie seems to have been spawned in some underground sewer, the Michael Bay-produced film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles holds the third place position firmly bringing its total to US$2.7 million dollars. That is a significant drop of 41% from last week, yet it brings the ragtag reboot up to a very respectable US$153.5 million.

Despite the heroic efforts of multiple box-office blockbusters, the trite selection of films have created the weakest North American summer box-office numbers since 2006.

This summer's box office trails last year's numbers by more than 15 percent and equates to the lowest-grossing summer in nearly a decade.

2015's summer is expected to be an exceptional improvement to the total box-office earnings. However, there is no contesting the refutable evidence of an overall downward spiral of ticket purchasing trends.
