Chadwick Boseman's 'Black Panther' landed a major breakout role in Joe and Anthony Russo's 'Captain America: Civil War.' Boseman is set to star in his standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is scheduled to be released in 2018.

Boseman's T'Challa, Prince of Wakanda, made his debut appearance in the recently released 'Captain America: Civil War' and ended up with a bigger, more important role than expected. He is set to star in his standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) on February 2018 under director Ryan Coogler of 'Creed' fame.

In 'Civil War,' T'Challa was first introduced as a member of the Wakanda royal family. Tragedy struck when his father, T'Chaka King of Wakanda, was killed in an unfortunate bombing incident during a terrorist attack. T'Challa went on to transform into the Black Panther after vowing to go after the Winter Soldier, who is suspected of orchestrating the attack.

According to The Wall Street Journal, 'Civil War' directors Joe and Anthony Russo intended to introduce the Black Panther - Marvel's first black superhero - into the MCU in a relevant way. Black Panther eventually played a strong role in the conflict between Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Evans' Captain America and Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier. But the superhero was allegedly not even on the script in its beginning stages.

"Once we had that spine we were then able to look at the movie as a whole and go, 'How do we balance out the film?'" His brother Anthony added, "We thought, wouldn't it be fun if we took a free radical, who enters the story, that has a strong investment in the plot, the strongest investment in the plot in many ways, and not have him give a damn about either side in the fight?"Joe Russo said.

Russo has admitted that translating the iconic Marvel character was intimidating.

"Black Panther is so revered. It's his first time on screen. We put so much pressure on ourselves. I think more pressure for that character alone than we did anything in the movie just because as a comic book fan I thought it was so important to get the interpretation of that character right," he said.

The directors have praised Boseman for his performance and dedication in addition to improvising an accent specially for the character.

'Black Panther' is set to hit theaters on February 16, 2018. It is intended as part of the MCU's Phase Three. It is currently in pre-production.
