Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" Tops U.S. Box Office for the Third Time, Currently Highest Grossing Movie for 2014

Marvel's "Guardian of the Galaxy" has soared to number one in the box office for its third time in the top spot over the last four weeks, making it the highest grossing movie in the United States for 2014.

With a strong debut last August 1 by grossing $94 million, the movie generated a new box office record for the biggest opening of all time on the month of August. After a week, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" triumphed over the intergalactic keepers and took the top spot, although the "Guardians" made a comeback and settled at number for the third and fourth week.

Over the Labor Day weekend, the movie raked in $17 million more and generated a total gross of more than $275 million, well enough to go beyond the year's current top grossing film "Captain America: The Winter Soldie" released last April.

The sequel to "Captain America" has now fallen to second place with a total gross of $259.77 million while "The Lego Movie" moves to the third with $257 million.

Other top-grossing films for the month of August include the "Turtles", which grossed a total of $11.9 million in its fourth week, taking second place to the "Guardians". Next is the romantic drama film "If I Stay", falling in at the third spot with $9.3 million.

Entering the chart at the fourth spot and grossing $8.6 million is "As Above, So Below" while "Let's Be Cops" takes the fifth place by raking in $8.27 million.

Positive reviews for "The November Man" starring Pierce Brosnan also debuted at number six in its first week of release by grossing $7.8 million.

According to Forbes, ticket sales this summer decreased by 15% compared to that of 2013. "Nine films have topped $200 million on domestic charts so far this year, only seven of which were summer releases," Forbes reported.
