Republican U.S. Senator Mark Kirk urged the United States government to launch a fierce offensive against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

On Tuesday, the militant group released a video allegedly showing the execution of another American journalist via beheading. ISIS also warned President Barack Obama that they will continue with their terror activities if the U.S. does not stop the air strikes against them, CBS Chicago detailed.

The journalist in the footage, Steven J. Sotloff, 31, was abducted in Syria last year, according to Chicago Sun.

Sen. Kirk said the beheading of the American journalist was barbaric and he urged the government to take a hard line against the extremist group. On Tuesday, he told the media that the U.S. president should "bomb the hell" out of ISIS.

However, Kirk, who is an ex-intelligence officer, admitted the U.S. government must first build up an effective strategy before bombing the ISIS militants.

The Republican politician also expressed little hope that the IS will free their remaining captives. Along this line, he proposed seeking help from the Turks in keeping journalists from entering IS territory, since freelance reporters usually enter the area via Turkey.

The only effective way to stop more journalists from being executed is to prevent them from entering land held by ISIS. This way, they will stop encouraging the extremists to use reporters as "propaganda toys," the senator explained.

Ross Rice, a security expert at CBS 2, worries that a U.S. citizen fighting alongside the IS would return. These people pose a great threat to national security because they can freely enter the U.S. and launch ISIS-initiated terror attacks in the country, Rice added.

"We saw what two people can do in Boston, Kirk said. "It doesn't take much."

The Islamist group has already taken over a wide portion of Syria and Iraq.
