Tech giant Google is gearing up for its biggest annual event which will kick off on May 18. Fans, analysts, developers, and investors will all shift their focus to Google's Mountain View headquarters as the company holds its annual I/O conference.

Although the Google I/O conference is mainly geared towards programmers, Google usually takes advantage of the massive attention the conference pulls to make some big announcements. The Google I/O conference has witnessed the announcement of some of Google's major products and projects. This year's Google I/O will be the first conference for Google's current chief executive officer and former product chief Sundar Pichai.

Tech analysts are expecting Google to unveil its roadmap and plans for the virtual reality platform at the upcoming I/O conference. The search engine giant surprised the tech community in 2014 when it unveiled the Google Cardboard, an inexpensive way to enjoy virtual reality through smartphones.

There are rumors that Google is planning to release an upgraded version of the Google Cardboard at this year's I/O conference. The upgraded Cardboard is rumored to sport an upgraded lens, improved sensors, and a sturdier plastic casing.

According to Time, the new Google Cardboard will look and feel more like the Gear VR headset from Samsung.

On the other hand, there are speculations that Google is also developing its own virtual reality device - one that will not require a smartphone in order to render virtual reality experience. According to The Wall Street Journal, this rumored virtual reality device from Google will sport a screen, cameras, and its own processor.

It is still unknown whether Google will launch the device at the company's upcoming I/O conference. However, there are strong indications that the tech giant might unveil the device at the event.
