The long rumored sci-film film Tetris is finally coming to big screen, and it is expected to cost $80 million.

The first installment of the trilogy is a joint project between China's Bruno Wu and Mortal Kombat producer Larry Kasanoff. The shooting will take place in China and other places, and will feature talented casts from the West and China.

Both companies have been in exclusive talks for over one year already and have established the Threshold Global Studios. In a joint statement, the company said that "financing has been secured, the story has been created, and now Wu and Kasanoff will co-produce."

Threshold Global intends to produce cross-cultural films for the international market. Acknowledging the fame of the 1980s building block video game Tetris, Kasanoff said the company believes it is the "perfect first project for this strategy."

"For our debut project, Threshold Global Studios will bring one of the most beloved, cross-generational gaming brands in the world to the big screen," he added.

Meanwhile, Threshold's Jimmy Lenner will be executive co-producing The Tetris and Seven Stars, while Dane Smith, known for his works including Deadpool, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will be responsible for the visual effects.

With the much anticipated film finally coming to play, Kasanoff promised Tetris The Movie is "not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise."

The 32-year-old Tetris video game has been downloaded more than 500 million times.

Kasanoff produced the two Mortal Kombat movies, while Wu is the founder and CEO of Sun Seven Stars Media - an entertainment firm committed to content creation, content distribution, event production and media services.
