NextGen Climate, an environmental group founded by investor and philanthropist Tom Steyer, said on Wednesday that they are focusing campaign efforts on one million undecided voters in key states across the U.S. and persuade them to support the group's climate change advocacy.

NextGen Climate's chief strategist Chris Lehane said that they intend to capitalize on the fact that citizens at the local level are receptive when it comes to climate change issues.

The group plans to focus their campaign efforts on different states with small number of voters called the "super shifters" or those undecided voters who could be truly swayed.

"That's an important band because these are going to be really close elections. Whichever way that band hits can certainly impact whoever ends up being the ultimate winner," Lehane said.

Small groups of undecided voters are found in states where congressional and governor races are competitive.

Specifically, the group targets gubernatorial races in Maine and Pennsylvania and congressional races in Michigan, Iowa, Colorado and New Hampshire. It also ran paid advertisements in Florida, where the race for governor is tight.

Here is the latest of a three-part video from NextGen Climate:

To reach their goal, the group expanded the campaign by hiring at least 700 staff and volunteers and opening more than 20 offices all over the country.

They plan to visit around 750,000 homes before November.

They also plan to target young voters. According to the group, 62 percent of voters age 18 to 34 believe that climate change is a concern.

One of NextGen Climate's programs is to provide aid to lawmakers who support their climate change advocacy with a US$50 million funding from the billionaire environmentalist.

The group said this strategy would help counter the fossil fuel industry's monetary influence.

In addition, the group's campaign aims to support Democrat candidates and reinforce negative image of the Republicans.

For instance, the climate change campaign gave the Democrats the opportunity to highlight their stand on environmental issues. In contrast, it linked causes such as gay marriage to garner more support and promote negative views of the Republicans.

NextGen Climate supports Democrat Bruce Braley in the Iowa Governor Race, where it also ran a negative campaign against Republican Joni Ernst.
