Current world No. 3 Angelique Kerber of Germany has been eliminated out of the ongoing 2016 French Open by unseeded player Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in the first round of the premier clay court tennis championship event in the world in Paris on Tuesday.

Bertens, who sits on the 58th spot in the world rankings, got the better of the reigning 2016 Australian Open champion with an impressive 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory to cause the first major upset in this year's Roland Garros. The 24-year-old right-handed Dutchwoman was fresh from claiming her second WTA title after winning the Nuremberg Open last week.

"I came here to play round by round, and I know that you must play your best tennis in the first rounds, as well, because everybody is a tough opponent to play," the 28-year-old left-handed Kerber said. "I was trying it. It was not my day. I tried to fight also in the third set. But unfortunately she played too good in the important moments."

Meanwhile, China's highest-ranked women's singles tennis players in the world successfully advanced to the second round of the prestigious tennis event in the Stade Roland Garros. Zhang Shuai and Wang Qiang victoriously dumped out their respective opponents in the opener, according to Fox Sports Asia.

Zhang Shuai, who is placed at 69th in the WTA's world rankings, had no trouble in winning her opening round match against the unheralded Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan. The right-handed 27-year-old Tianjin native defeated the 31-year-old Kazakhstani player, who is currently ranking 492nd in the world, in two straight sets 7-5, 6-2 victory.

While 24-year-old world No. 74 Wang Qiang advanced to the second round after smashing the teenager Tessah Andrianjafitrimo of France with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win in a game that lasted for just 51 minutes. The 17-year-old Andrianjafitrimo was playing in her primary match in the main draw of a grand slam, having entered the tourney as a wildcard.
