Floyd Mayweather to 50 Cent: “Reading will not define my place in boxing history”

Floyd Mayweather

Floyd "The Money" Mayweather Jr. fired back at 50 Cent's allegations that he can't read well during a conference call on Wednesday.

The 37 year-old unbeaten boxer threw verbal jabs at the rapper saying that it was wrong making fun of people who can't read well during a promotion call for his Sept. 13 Welterweight title rematch with Marcos Maidana.

Rapper Curtis Jackson, famously known as 50 Cent, posted a vow last month on Instagram saying that he will donate $750,000 to charity if his former friend could flawlessly read one page of a "Harry Potter" novel.

"Making fun of a person because they can't read is not funny. It's tragic," said Mayweather. "If I couldn't read, it would make my accomplishments that much more impressive.

"Reading will not define my place in boxing history. Will God not let me in heaven because I didn't read like a news anchor? Look, I would be perfect at reading if it was how I made my living and fed my family." added Mayweather.

According to Mayweather, he couldn't care less because his job was to focus on his boxing.

He also claimed that he dropped out of high school in order to pursue boxing and has become the highest paid athlete in the world.

He also noted that he was forced to read copy off Teleprompters every now and then, like how most television hosts do.

"I don't focus on clown stuff. That's for the circus," Mayweather said. "I got where I am by being smart, making smart moves, doing what's best for Floyd Mayweather."

The reading issue stemmed from a radio station's release of Mayweather's tape in which the boxer had difficulty reading station promotions, also known as drop.

Mayweather's World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association belts will be put on the line in a bout against Maidana after the former's majority decision victory last May.

Mayweather has an unbeaten record of 46 wins, 26 of which was won through knockout. He is also ranked as the number one pound for pound fighter by The Ring Magazine.
