Social networking website Twitter announced on Tuesday that it is making some major modification to its service. Twitter has finally rolled out the change that will overhaul its 140-character limit per tweet, mainly by taking out image and video links.

Now, users would be able to add multimedia files like pictures and videos to their tweets without worrying that it will eat up Twitter's 140-character limit, according to Tech Crunch. Apart from that, Twitter is also making major changes to the way the service handles conversations between its users.

Twitter co-founder and chief executive officer Jack Dorsey told BBC that "One of the biggest priorities for us this year is to really refine our product, to make it simpler. I think there's a story to be told about what Twitter's for, and to continue to strengthen why you would use Twitter."

Among the changes outlined by Twitter is that it will ditch @names in reply to tweets. Twitter also stated that it will allow users to retweet and quote-tweet themselves, a feature which will allow users to repost any of their old tweets and add new comments to it.

Many tech analysts have noted that the changes Twitter is adopting are part of the company's strategy to attract more users. Statistics reveal that Twitter is experiencing a slump in terms of user growth. This has been blamed on Twitter's somewhat sophisticated and confusing platform.

To maintain its spot as one of the largest social networking services, Twitter will also need to devise new methods of not only acquiring new users but also integrating new functions to make existing users stay.

Twitter is reportedly planning to roll out these new features later this year. Due to the massive nature of the overhaul, Twitter is giving third-party developers more time to integrate the changes into their apps and websites.
