Tech giant Apple has announced that it is building a new device that will rival the Amazon Echo. Apple's product is going to be powered by the company's smart personal assistant, Siri.

Right now, the Amazon Echo only has one major competitor in the market, the Google Home. However, if recent reports are true, the two will be welcoming a new competitor in the fray, the yet to be named Apple device.

Aside from being powered by Siri, Apple's device will reportedly be able to turn appliances on and off as long as these appliances are compatible with Apple's Homekit platform. The device might still be in its early development phase and may be a sort of a long-term project, according to The Information.

As part of this long-term development process, Apple has announced that it is opening up Siri to outside developers. Through this initiative, the smart personal assistant can be integrated into the function or feature of part of third-party apps. According to CNet, Apple might release Siri for developers at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

Although some third-party apps like Yelp have managed to integrate Siri into their services, they were able to do so by striking a specially crafted deal with Apple. A Siri system development kit (SDK) will allow any developer to utilize Siri's full functions, however, they desire.

Some tech experts believe that Amazon Echo's success can be attributed to the fact that Amazon allows third-party apps provide services that the company cannot perform on its own.

Meanwhile, Google is expected to release the SDK for Home later this year.
