Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs reportedly turned down the offer of incoming Louis van Gaal replacement, Jose Mourinho, to stay with the Old Trafford coaching crew next season as he would not accept a lesser role than what he has now in the new regime.

The Daily Mirror reported that Mourinho's first task upon taking over from van Gaal this summer is to "try to persuade Ryan Giggs not to leave" as the Portuguese mentor "wants him to remain as part of a new-look coaching staff".

However, the 42-year-old Giggs, who had been with the club for 28 years both as a player and coach, is said to be not likely "to accept a lesser role" under Mourinho.

The report noted that Mourinho is set to be named new Man United head coach before the weekend but Giggs future with the club "remains unclear".

With the Special One at the helm, Giggs will definitely no longer be the no. 2 man in the Red Devils bench as Mourinho has his trusted assistant of 15 years, Rui Faria, coming with him to Manchester along with goalkeeping mentor Silvinho Louro.

While Mourinho may sincerely want the United legend to stay, the latter will not be among the top decision makers of the team anymore and will be given an entirely different role, which is said to be not acceptable to the former midfielder, as per Caught Offside.

The Cardiff, Wales native owns one of the longest tenures in a single club in the English Premier League as he had been with the Red Devils since November of 1987 as a player. He had helped the team win 13 English top flight trophies, four FA Cups, three League Cups, and two Champions League titles in an illustrious 24-year senior playing career all with the same club.

Meanwhile, recent rumors are out that Giggs could become the next Everton head coach if he decides to exit the Old Trafford this summer, according to the Guardian.
