Telecommunications giant Motorola has launched the Moto 360, the company's first entry into the smart watch wearables category, on Friday. It would be available at Motorola.com, Google Play and Best Buy for a retail price of US$249.99, starting from noon EST.

Later this fall, two new options of metal bands would be available, increasing the price of the device to US$299.99. But individuals who already have the device and wish to have the metal bands to hold the Moto 360 could purchase them for $79.99 when available. Motorola would also be offering leather bands at the same time as official accessories, retailing for $29.99 a pop.

The smart watch would be running on Android Wear, Google's version of Android for wearable devices, and a circular edge-to-edge display, which has an occlusion at the bottom of the device for sensors and radios. The Moto 360 is equipped with a pedometer, is made from stainless steel and weighs 1.72 ounces, which is comparatively less than the weight of either Samsung Gear Live and LG G Watch. It also has the unique feature of charging wirelessly, although Apple would be allegedly putting the technology into its entry into the category, the iWatch.

Motorola is hoping that the wireless charging capability, design and premium materials of the watch would persuade consumers to spend an extra $20 to $50 over the price of what the company's competitors in the market are charging for their devices.

The Moto 360 would be sporting a 1.56-inch display with a 320-by-290 screen resolution that has 205 pixels per square inch and a watch face that measures 46 millimeters in diameter.

It is also endowed with the TI OMAP 3 processor, 512 megabytes of random access memory, 4GB worth of internal storage, a 320mAh battery and a vibration motor for alerts and notifications.
