Kristen Bell has opened up about her struggle with depression during her college years in an essay for Motto published on Tuesday.

In the essay, Bell revealed that she felt "worthless" and "like a failure" when she suffered from the mental illness and hopes to help other people suffering from the disorder by sharing her own experiences and ending the stigma surrounding the disorder.

"I didn't speak publicly about my struggles with mental health for the first 15 years of my career," the Bad Moms star wrote. "But now I'm at a point where I don't believe anything should be taboo. So here I am, talking to you about what I've experienced."

"I felt plagued with a negative attitude and a sense that I was permanently in the shade," she said, recalling her time as a student at New York University. "I'm normally such a bubbly, positive person, and all of a sudden I stopped feeling like myself."

Bell said depression gave her a "complete and utter sense of isolation and loneliness" and made her feel "worthless, like I had nothing to offer, like I was a failure."

Bell also thanked her mom for her openness towards the mental illness and for encouraging her to seek help during her struggle with depression. The 35-year-old also wishes to be just as helpful to other people who are in a similar situation by being candid about her depression struggles.

"There is such an extreme stigma about mental health issues," Bell continued. "Anxiety and depression are impervious to accolades or achievements. Anyone can be affected, despite their level of success or their place on the food chain. In fact, there is a good chance you know someone who is struggling with it since nearly 20% of American adults face some form of mental illness in their lifetime."

Bell added that mental health check-ins should be carried out as regularly as a dentist appointment.

"There's nothing weak about struggling with mental illness," she wrote. "Depression is a problem that actually has so many solutions. Let's work together to find those solutions for each other and cast some light on a dark situation."
