After a drop in its obesity rate in 2012, Texas saw obesity figures hit an all time high last year at 34.8 percent.

Currently, 30.9 percent of people who live in Texas are obese. That compares to two years ago when there was a decrease in the obesity rate from 30.4 percent to 29.2 percent.

The data was obtained by Trust for America's Health. Figures are believed to be a conservative estimate considering the statistics were obtained through random telephone surveys.

The report was published in "The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America." Originally, the annual report was entitled "F as in Fat".

"If we don't reverse this trend, the nation will stay on course to disastrous health outcomes," said Dr. Jeffrey Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health.

Due to the new figures, the group projects a good number of obese Texans will more likely acquire a variety of diseases if they don't lose weight.

Heart disease, one of the likely conditions to develop from obesity, affected 1.26 million Texans in 2010. If rates continue to increase, by 2030, the figure could rise to 5.7 million.

Adult-onset diabetes could also rise from 2 million in 2010 to 2.85 million in 2030.

Obesity-related cancer, on the other hand could increase from 328,379 to 810,806 cases.

Dr. Eduardo Sanchez, deputy medical officer with the American Heart Association in Dallas, said he is deeply troubled with the findings of the report, especially since the population of the state is increasing.

"The demographics in our state are going to make holding the line and even reversing the rate of obesity a challenge. Latinos are growing in absolute numbers and as a percentage of the total population, and if you just look at the prevalence of obesity in Latinos ... the issues become even more striking," Sanchez explained.

Nationwide, obesity rates amongst adult Latinos are at 42.5 percent.
