Fast-paced TV has No Effect on Children’s Concentration - New Research

Postman Pat

A new research showed that watching fast-paced children television programs doesn't have any effects on a child's concentration.

Alexandra Lamont from Keele University said that little research has been done to the belief that television watching has a bad effect to the children.

According to previous research, television does affect behavioral problems, attention deficits and developmental challenges.

To come up with this study, researchers studied the reaction of 41 3- and 4-year-olds after watching Postman Pat in different versions in slow and fast motion.

After watching Postman Pat, they were asked to complete a block building task as a test of their program comprehension.

Researchers found out that children paid more attention to the fast-paced program than the slow-paced program.

Even then, the children seemed to put less effort and pay less attention in doing their task after watching the fast-paced program.

Researchers said that the children performed better after watching Postman Pat and there was no difference in the comprehension of the children after watching the program.

Lamont said that they know that fast-paced programs have no detrimental effects on the children's behavior.

She also said that fast-paced children's programs can sustain children's attention and boost their ability to undertake their tasks.

Although she believes that there are still more questions that need to be answered, they believe that their findings prove that there is no harm in using fast-paced technology on children.

The study came from the findings of Dr. Alexandra Lamont, Dr. Sarah Rose and Dr. Nicholas Reyland from Keele University that was presented at the British Psychological Society's Developmental Psychology Section annual conference in Amsterdam.
