Charlotte Hornets point guard Jeremy Lin is reportedly set to decline his player option this year which will make him a free agent in July.

Sports Illustrated reported that Lin "will decline the player option on his contract and become an unrestricted free agent this summer", which attracted numerous interests from other NBA clubs.

With the 27-year-old's availability in the summer, at least seven teams, including the Hornets, are said to be interested in acquiring the former Harvard standout, namely his former teams the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, and Los Angeles Lakers. The other two squads that are allegedly also going after Lin in free-agency are the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

As of the moment, the race for the 6-foot-3 floor general, who is deemed by Yahoo Sports as the fourth-best free agent point guard this summer after Memphis' Mike Conley, Sacramento's Rajon Rondo, and Dallas' Deron Williams, is still wide open as no team has any edge on the other to sign him for next season, except maybe his incumbent squad Charlotte.

CBS Sports noted that Lin opting out after the first season of his two-year, $4.3 million deal with the Hornets is "unsurprising" as the Torrance, California native has evidently "outplayed" the contract with his stellar play off-the-bench for head coach Steve Clifford in the recent term.

Lin averaged 11.7 points, 3.0 assists, and a career-best 3.2 rebounds per game in his first season with Charlotte playing in 26.3 minutes a night for Clifford, which is a marked improvement from his one-season stay with the Lakers in 2014-2015.

There are speculations that the Lakers may offer Lin a maximum salary deal to get him back this summer as the Hollywood squad is allegedly thinking that he would be an ideal fit for sophomore D'Angelo Russell.

However, Lin has not made indications on which team he would like to play for next season as more NBA rumors are expected to follow him until free-agency.
