Rally Held for Gay, Pregnant Teacher Fired from Catholic School

Human rights activists rallied on Sunday morning in support of a Detroit teacher who was fired from a catholic school due to her nontraditional pregnancy.

Supporters gathered in front of Marian High School to protest the firing of 33-year-old Barbara Webb who was reportedly let go for being gay and pregnant.

Webb, who was open to being gay, was fired from the Catholic girls' school in August when the administration found out that she was pregnant.

The chemistry teacher shared her dismissal on Facebook and urged people to speak up for change.

Her Facebook post went viral and her number of supporters grew massively.

The two-hour rally on Sunday for Webb was attended by more than a hundred protesters holding signs for human rights equality.

The rally was organized by Amanda Ruud McVety, a 2002 Marian High School graduate, who said that through actions and words, human diversity must be valued.

"It's time homosexuals are seen as equals and not be shamed for who they are," McVety said.

McVety created a Facebook page for Webb called "I Stand With Barb Webb," which had garnered a following of about 3,300 users by Sunday afternoon.

In a statement released by McVety, she said the firing of Webb was contradictory to the social-justice philosophy taught at the school.

Another Marian graduate, Amber Mazza Cunnings, joined the rally, saying that the situation was a human rights issue, and Marian taught them to stand up for social injustice.

Besides McVety and Cunnings, the website Change.org, started a petition urging the administrators at Marian to support the gay community, which included the LGBT staff and students of the school.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Webb said her notice of termination did not give a reason for the dismissal, but previous talks with the school administration emphasized a morality clause in her contract.

Meanwhile, Marian president, Sister Lenore Pochelski, verified that Webb was fired on Aug. 19, but did not provide any further information on the matter.

The school did not answer any calls from media outlets during the rally on Sunday.
