Uber has announced a new feature that will let riders to book a ride up to 30 days ahead of time and eventually scheduled rides would come to all its users.

Tom Fallows, Uber’s director of global experiences, said users’ demand for ride scheduling that has extended back into the early days of the company was too great to ignore.

“The voice that speaks loudest at Uber is that of the consumer,” Mr. Fallows said in an interview.

The experiment is starting in Seattle and currently limited to riders who have a business profile. The goal is to target those travelers who may be anxious about hailing an Uber at 4 a.m. for a flight or someone who needs to schedule an Uber to be there when they finish a meeting. Business travel is just the start and Uber says it plans to make this feature available to all riders eventually.

Rides can be scheduled as soon as 30 minutes before you need them and up to 30 days ahead of time. UberX users need to put in a date, time, pickup location and destination; they will receive a fare estimate, and then after selecting the payment method, a ride will be scheduled for that date. Uber will send reminders, one 24 hours and another 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled ride.

Surge pricing will definitely apply. Scheduled rides will be priced just like any other ride. Uber will send a notification when a car is on its way and will also let riders know whether surge pricing will apply.

Uber is not the ride-hailing company to test scheduled rides, but it is the first to bring it to customers. Lyft has also announced it was testing scheduling in May and the experiment was limited to its San Francisco employee base.
