Warcraft, the movie version of the colossally hit video game, has already set box office records in China after it grossed an impressive $90 million two days after its release in the country.

The figure was record-setting enough to place Warcraft on the league of two other movies to pass the 500 million yuan-mark in the Chinese box.

But that doesn't mean the film is a solid international success.

In North America, Warcraft debuted tepidly, earning a disappointing $22 million and landing on the third spot in the box office, movie analysts revealed.

The amount was not even a quarter of its cost. The movie was produced to a tune of $160 million and producers were looking to the U.S. market to recoup the money since it is more lucrative compared to foreign markets.

The Conjuring 2 and Now You See Me 2, meanwhile, grabbed the first two spots.

Even critics are not happy about Warcraft, giving the movie a mere 24 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film's strong performance, nevertheless, gives a bright spot, surprising Hollywood bosses who remain puzzled of the booming market. By 2017, China is slated to trump the U.S. as the world's biggest box office market. When this happens, China will heavily influence Hollywood about what movies to make.

Warcraft to be specific has a strong backing from China, with Legendary Entertainment as one of the movie's financiers.

Legendary was recently purchased by China's Dalian Wanda Group Corp. for $3.5 billion.

Wanda is the largest operator of movie theaters in China.
