Russia will take on Slovakia in the first encounter of the second round of the group stages of the ongoing UEFA European Championships 2016 at Stade Pierre Mauroy in French city of Lille Metropole on Wednesday. Hosts France will face Albania, and Romania face will Switzerland in the other matches on the day at Stade Velodrome in Marseille and Parc des Princes in Paris respectively.

Russia began their Euro 2016 campaign with a 1-1 draw against dominant England at Marseille on Saturday night. Russian striker Vasili Berezutski grabbed a stoppage-time goal, helping his side to earn an unlikely draw against England.  

"I can thank my players because they were very much in the game right to the death and despite the pressure they were able to score even though it's always difficult at that stage of the game," Russian coach Leonid Slutsky said after the draw. "They kept on scrapping to the end and saved a result. I'd like to point out that England dominated but we were able to contain them and their dangerous forwards."

Slovakia, on the other hand, lost their opening game 2-1 against Wales at Bordeaux on Saturday.

"I think it is my proudest moment. Our supporters keep on topping what they have done - that support today was unbelievable," Wales manager Chris Coleman said after the victory. Wales is participating in a major football tournament after almost six decades.
