Zuckerberg Willing to Spend Billions to Connect Everyone to the Internet

Facebook CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg, said he's ready to spend "billions of dollars in the next decade" just to get everybody online.

The 30-year old CEO made the announcement during his conference at the recent ''Mexico Siglo XXI'' seminar organized by the Telmex foundation in Mexico City.

Zuckerberg and his company are setting their sights on expanding their reach to developing countries through a project called Internet.org. In most developing countries in Asia and Africa, mobile phone use is popular, but Internet connections and usage can still be scarce.

Through Internet.org, Zuckerberg first suggested they should spend money for making sure people in Zambia get Internet access. The proposal allows users to connect online so they can visit Facebook ana a few other websites without spending money.

According to the International Telecommunications Union , over three billion people will be online by the end of 2014. Around half of those online will have Facebook accounts.

"What really matters is connecting everyone and even if it means that Facebook has to spend billions of dollars over the next decade to make that plan possible, I think that in the long term will be good for us and for everyone," Zuckerberg said.

Facebook board members asked Zuckerberg if spending billions to bring the internet to developing countries will benefit the company. Zuckerberg assured them that when local businesses thrive, everybody benefits from the growth.

"I believe that ... when everyone is on the Internet all of our businesses and economies will be better," Zuckerberg explained.

Aside from devising strategies to make the internet available to everyone, Zuckerberg also said WhatsApp, the instant messaging affirm acquired by Facebook, will be the new global texting platform, having the ability to connect 2 to 3 billion people around the world.
