'Hamilton' Dominates Tony Awards; Dubbed as a 'Cultural Phenomenon'

Hamilton, the musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, dominated the 70th Annual Tony Awards with 11 recognitions and a record-breaking 16 nominations.

Hamilton won Best Choreography, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Orchestrations and Best Direction of a Musical.

Hamilton also received Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and the prestigious, Best Musical.

Leslie Odom Jr. got the Best Lead Actor in a Musical while Daveed Diggs received Best Featured Actor in a Musical and Renée Elise Goldsberry named Best Feature Actress in a Musical.

Phillipa Soo was acknowledged with a nomination for the Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Jonathan Groff and Christopher Jackson were also nominated for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.

U.S. President Barack Obama together and First Lady Michelle Obama presented the whole cast of Hamilton with a video message at Tony Awards.

"[It was] not only a smash hit but a civics lesson our kids can't get enough of," President Obama described the show. Common, a hip-hop artist, on the other hand, described Hamilton as a "cultural phenomenon."

Among the prestigious awards, which includes the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Hamilton was dubbed as "a landmark American musical" for gathering A-listers like JJ Abrams, Star Wars director, Jay-Z and President Obama.

Hamilton continues to dominate, and the show is totally sold out until January 2017.

In fact, Hamilton's album has been recognized as the highest-selling cast recording in 50 years, resulting in a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
