In a statement sent to California's Attorney General, tech company Acer admitted that hackers were able to break into the company's online store and steal sensitive and highly-classified customer data.

Acer added that information such as customer names, addresses, credit card details - including expiry dates and CVC security codes - were among the information stolen by the hackers.

According to PCWorld, Acer confirmed that more than 34,500 customers from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico were affected by the hack.

Acer has yet to release a detailed report regarding how the hackers were able to penetrate its servers. The company only said that the hack was a result of an unspecified security issue.

Acer added that the data was stolen because it is stored in an unsecured format.

In the letter sent by Acer to California's Attorney General, the company confirmed that hackers obtained at least a year's worth of data, from May 12, 2015 to April 28, 2016. Customers who made purchases on Acer's online site within that timeline are at high risk.

Security researchers said that the information stolen by the hackers is critical, since it can be used to commit fraud. On the other hand, Acer said that only a small segment of its online shoppers were affected and that it is already working on strategies to minimize the impact of the hack on its users.

Acer confirmed that while customer names and credit card information were stolen by the hackers, information like social security numbers, passwords, and login credentials were not affected by the hack.

Acer has already sent out a letter to affected users, informing them of the breach. Moreover, the company further encourages all of its customers to be vigilant and report any suspected instances of identity theft or online fraud.
