Earlier this month, the Shanghai Disneyland Resort opened its doors to the public and the theme park has already on track to become China's No. 1 tourist attraction, with an estimated minimum of 40,000 visitors every month.

After the attraction's success in the Chinese capital, Disney is reportedly planning a second one and several cities are vying to be chosen as the destination for the next Disneyland.

The Chongqing city municipality announced on Monday (June 27) that the city was actively bidding to host a new Disney theme park in the city, which is located in southwest China.

The municipality noted that Disney had plans to build a second resort in central or western China even before it started construction work on the Shanghai Disneyland resort.

"It is possible that our municipality will receive the project," the local body said on its website, according to state-run news outlet People's Daily.

However, the commission added that project approval and review for the introduction of a new Disneyland theme park was still pending.

The municipality's comments came in the form of a response to a local citizen's suggestion to develop entertainment projects in the city in order to boost tourism and put the city on the global map.

In response to the reports, a Disney spokesman told South China Morning Post that the entertainment company's current focus is on the Shanghai Disneyland's "successful opening, operation and future expansion."

Chengdu City is also reportedly also competing to bring the Disney project to its city, after official instructions leaked online last week, but the local government body has denied the reports.
