Former NBA Player Tony Mitchell to Play in Israel After Stint in China

Former Chinese National Basketball League (NBL) foreign reinforcement Tony Mitchell has reportedly signed with the Israeli professional basketball club Maccabi Hunter Haifa of the Ligat HaAl.

According to Asia-Basket, the 24-year-old 6-foot-8-inches tall American forward and the Jeff Rosen-owned team have reached an agreement. Mitchell is set to play for the side in the upcoming 2016-17 season.

Mitchell played in China for the Guangxi Weizhuang Rhinos of the Chinese NBL this summer. The native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin played 28 official games with the Rhinos while averaging 17.5 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.7 blocked shots, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per contest. He was the NBL's third-leading rim protector and came out as the tenth-best rebounder of the league.

Mitchell helped Guangxi to reach the quarterfinal round and finished sixth overall in the regular season with a 15-11 win-loss record. They faced Henan in the first round of the playoffs but fell short of advancing to the semifinal stage.

Mitchell played college basketball with the North Texas Mean Green from 2011 to 2013. In his last season with the varsity team, he posted averages of 13.0 points, 8.5 boards, and 2.7 blocked shots in 32.4 minutes while playing in 32 official games. Mitchell was the 2013 NBA Draft 37th overall pick selected by the Detroit Pistons.

According to the official website of the NBA, in his solitary season with the Pistons, Mitchell registered averages of 1.0 point and 1.2 rebounds in 3.8 minutes of playing time in 21 official matches. He shoots 41.7 percent from the field and 57.9 percent defendable from the foul line.

Mitchell has also previously played in Venezuela (Cocodrilos), Puerto Rico (Atleticos) and in the NBA D-league (Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Grand Rapids Drive). He also represented USA at the World Championships U19 in Latvia five years ago.
