The Indian government has imposed an anti-dumping duty on cold-rolled (CR) flat steel products from China.

The Indian finance ministry also imposed an anti-dumping duty (ADD) on cold-rolled flat steel products from three other countries; Japan, Ukraine, and South Korea. The temporary ADD on a range of steel products from these four countries will be applicable for six months.

"An anti-dumping duty of the difference between the landed value of the steel products and US $594 per tonne will be levied," an Indian government statement said. The duty was levied on the recommendation of the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping in a bid to protect the interests of domestic steel manufacturers.

"The DGAD has come to the provisional conclusion that the subject goods have been exported to India from the subject countries below normal value (and) the domestic industry has suffered material injury on account of subject imports from the subject countries," the statement added.

The move comes two weeks after India's finance ministry decided to impose a similar anti-dumping levy on hot rolled flat steel products from China, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, and Brazil. Last week, Beijing also announced that it would also impose anti-dumping duties on iron-based amorphous alloy ribbon products from the U.S. and Japan.

Moody's Investors Service Research, in its recent report, said that India's protectionist moves such as the ADD would impact major Chinese steel producers.  The international market analysis firm, however, pointed out that India's steel demand will increase in coming months.
