A man from China's Henan province fell victim to a conman claiming to be actor Wang Baoqiang, who is in the middle of a messy divorce from his wife.

On Tuesday, bank employees said that they tried but failed to convince the Minquan county-based victim, surnamed Zhang, that the 5,000 yuan ($754) he was wiring was being transferred to the account of a fraudster and not the "Lost in Thailand" actor, according to the Global Times.

It wasn't until police arrived at the scene that Zhang, who is a huge fan of Wang, realized he had just been conned. He told authorities that he received a text message from a man posing as the 32-year-old star last week requesting for money. The text message read as follows:

"Hi, this is actor Wang Baoqiang. I got divorced recently and now I'm penniless ... Can you please lend me 5,000 yuan? I will pay you back tenfold."

Zhang said he was convinced that the text was from Wang because it was in line with what was being reported in the media.

Wang's divorce scandal has become a hot topic of discussion after the actor announced via Weibo on Sunday that he was divorcing his wife Ma Rong after learning of her sexual relations with his manager Song Zhe, as previously reported.

It is also being reported that Wang cannot pay for legal fees to fight the divorce case after his estranged wife and her lover allegedly transferred all of his assets to their name, according to Yibada.
