People With AB Blood Type Likely To Develop Dementia, Study Shows

An American Academy of Neurology study shows that people with AB blood type are more likely to develop memory loss as they grow older.

Researchers said that people with AB blood has an 82 percent chance of developing thinking and memory problems that leads to dementia.

The researchers studied 30,000 people for 3.4 years. Using this research, they identified 495 participants that had thinking and memory problems.

They explained that in the 495 participants that had cognitive impairment, 6 percent of those had AB blood type.

Mary Cushman of the University of Vermont said the study looks at blood type and risk of cognitive impairment.

She said that their findings show the connection between vascular issues and brain health because blood types are related to other vascular conditions like stroke.

The research also shows that people with type O blood had lower risk of heart disease and stroke. Heart attacks and strokes increase chances of memory loss and dementia.

Dementia is a long term loss of the ability to think and reason clearly that can affect a person's daily function.

It comes from age, where 3 percent of elderly people age 65 to 74 years old develops them, while, 47 percent of elderly people age 85 develops some form of dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia that affects 75 percent of elderly people,

To date, Researchers are focused on confirming their results.
