U.S President Barack Obama has called on China to accelerate its measures to overcome overproduction in the country's industrial sector.

Obama conveyed the message to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on the sidelines of ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York, the BBC reported.

In a separate statement issued by the White House, Obama also called on China to allow a level playing field so that all companies can compete fairly in the Chinese market.

China has been accused of encouraging overproduction to overcome tepid demand in the local economy. This overproduction--particularly in China's steel sector--has had an effect across the world, with several countries finding it difficult to compete with cheap Chinese steel imports.

Steel manufacturers from UK and US have been severely affected by cheap Chinese steel imports. Earlier this year, US Steel Corporation filed a trade complaint against China, calling for a complete ban on Chinese steel imports into the US.

U.S presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have spoken about the impact of Chinese steel imports on US steel companies during their campaign trail. Both Clinton and Trump have promised to take stern measures against China if elected as President.

The U.K has equally piled pressure on China to cut down on its steel over production.

China has refused to reduce steel production abruptly in the country. Instead authorities have promised to address the issue slowly and steadily.
