US President-elect Donald Trump has been lauded by Chinese state-run media who said that his emergence could herald a "reshaping" of China-US relations.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation earlier this week. In the discussion, President Xi said that the two world powers have a mutual interest in cooperation. In turn, Trump's office said that the two leaders have established a mutual respect for each other.

In an editorial, China's Global Mail claimed the conversation between the two leaders was diplomatically impeccable and that it had bolstered bilateral relations for the next four years. The editorial went on to say that Barack Obama's foreign policy towards Asia was hugely influenced by the cold war-shaped outlook of the American elites.

"Trump is probably the very American leader who will make strides in reshaping major-power relations in a pragmatic manner," it read.

This was a major turn-around from the same newspaper's editorial the day before. In it, the incoming US president had received a stark warning not to implement his campaign promise levy heavy tariffs on Chinese goods.

The paper warned that if Trump made good on his threat, China would retaliate by targeting US cars, aircraft, soybeans, and iPhones.

During his campaigns, Trump frequently attacked China. He went as far as calling the Asian behemoth America's "enemy." He also accused China of artificially lowering its currency to boost its exports.

Trump also threatened to impose a 45 percent tariff on Chinese goods while also pledging to stand up to a country that he believes views the United States as a pushover.

However, some have questioned whether his actions will match his campaign promises.
