While most telecommunications company are limited to delivering Internet services through physical fiber or cable connections and cellular towers, SpaceX has an ambitious plan of launching a space network composed of more than 4,000 satellites. SpaceX detailed its plans through a filing recently submitted to the United States Federal Communications Commission.

SpaceX is one of several tech companies aiming to provide global Internet access through space satellites. To be exact, SpaceX plans to launch 4,425 satellites to complete its network. The company's plan to do so suffered a major setback when one of its rockets exploded during launch in September.

In a statement acquired by BBC, SpaceX said, "Once fully deployed, the SpaceX system will pass over virtually all parts of the Earth's surface and therefore, in principle, have the ability to provide ubiquitous global service."

According to Ars Technica, SpaceX plans to launch its satellites to altitudes between 715 miles and 823 miles. This is above the current altitude of the International Space Station but below the altitude of most geostationary satellites.

SpaceX has been very public about its intention of launching satellites into space, regardless of their purposes. Next year, the tech company is expected to send some prototype satellites to test their effectiveness. However, many tech experts say SpaceX's plan to create a global Internet network using satellites will not be fully operational until the turn of the decade.

So far, SpaceX is the only company that has a clear plan of sending satellites into orbit for the purpose of creating a global Internet network. Major satellite communications company like Intelsat, Telesat, SES, and Boeing are still in various stages in their developmental plans.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk claims launching thousands of satellites into orbit to provide Internet connectivity back to Earth will be the biggest undertaking of any tech company to date. Musk added that the project would cost about $10 billion to turn it into a reality.
