China’s Defence Spending To Increase

A recent report by a leading British defense publishing company suggested that arms race in the Asian region is unlikely to subside in the coming years. The report cited arms race between the regional powers India and China as the main reason for unabated arms race.

The IHS Jane's report claimed that China's defence spending will touch a whopping to $233 billion by 2020 from nearly $123 billion spent in 2010.

The continuous rising tension in South China Sea is likely to be the main catalyst in pushing Beijing to splash more cash for defense and military acquisition, the report added.

It also pointed out that arms race has got a huge boost because several countries have became indulgent in "showing off" their military strength. This has shifted the traditional focus from "territorial defense" as the main reason for acquiring military arsenals.

The demonstration of military strength, the report added, is a new trend in the region, and this trend will continue to play a key role in establishing military contacts between various countries.

Speaking on India's increasing militarization, the report said: "India needs new equipment to fulfill its modernization drive.... Over the next three years, India will re-emerge as a key growth market for defence suppliers."

The IHS Jane's comprehensive study further observed that China will spend more than four times than the Great Britain and its military budget will outpace defense spending of western European powers by 2020.

It then claimed that traditional big spenders like Saudi Arabia and Russia are likely to be more conservative on military acquisitions as both oil dependent countries will continue to suffer from slump in oil prices.
