Lucid Motors has unveiled its very first car -  a fully electric sedan called the ‘Air’ that is designed for the executive market.

The luxury sleek electric sedan has a design that will challenge Tesla’s Model S. It is described as sumptuous and ferociously fast. However, it is also a traditional gas-powered car just like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

During a ceremony at the company’s Fremont workshop, the California-based carmaker displayed electric sedan’s 100 kWh battery, which is similar with what Tesla is currently using in its Model S. But Lucid is also planning to offer a 130 kWh option. The company claimed that the car has a range of 400 miles per charge.

Lucid Air has two motors located at the front and back, which produce 1,000 horsepower that drive the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds. It has integrated HVAC and suspension system in the front part of the electric car. Air will be equipped with all the sensors and computing power required for self-driving.

In addition, the company claimed that Air’s interior space will be a full-sized sedan. It has two rear executive seats that can be reclined up to 55 degrees, offering a first-class aircraft seating experience.

“We need to take the very best of the innovation that’s coming, this convergence of technologies — the autonomous (driving), the connectedness, the ride sharing — we need to take that and infuse it with all the things we love and are passionate about with the automobile,” former Mazda executive Derek Jenkins, who now serves as Lucid’s vice president of design, said.

Car’s cabin will feature a 29-speaker audio system with 12 beam-forming microphones, while the dashboard houses multiple touch-screen displays with the center that offers more storage space. Lucid Air also provides Alexa-style voice-controlled assistant. Its headlights are using high-intensity LEDs that have 9740 microlens array per headlight.

Lucid Air production will commence in Casa Grande, Arizona, in 2018. The company said that they might employ an estimated 2,000 people by 2020 to work on the electric car. The price of Lucid Air is poised to start at $100,000.
