Toyota and BMW are reportedly working together to design and manufacture the next generation Toyota Corolla. Both companies have already collaborated on several mutual projects in the past including the successor of the Toyota Supra.

Toyota and BMW are yet to confirm the news, but there are several reports claiming that the next generation Toyota Corolla will sport an engine provided by BMW, according to Insider Car News. The exact specs of the engine are still unknown, but a BMW-designed engine will always bode well for any car that will house it.

Some analysts said that Toyota's decision to tap BMW to provide the engine for the upcoming generation of Corolla is a reaction to the slew of new models from competing companies, which sport performance-oriented engines. The Nissan Sentra has a couple of new performance models bearing the SR Turbo and Nismo brand. The Hyundai Elantra also has a turbocharged sport model.

There are a lot of speculations regarding which BMW engine Toyota is going to use on its new generation Corolla. Possible choices include BMW's 2.0-liter engine with 180 horsepower or something that has more than 200-horsepower.

On the other hand, Toyota can instead focus on fuel-economy and use BMW's 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, which is not the most powerful with only 134 horsepower; but its fuel efficiency and impressive gas mileage are sure to appeal to consumers especially with the current rise of electric vehicles.

According to Digital Trends, the next-generation of Corolla's will not be manufactured until 2018.
