A mad traffic was witnessed on Monday along the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Express (G4) stretching for a distance of over 1 kilometer from the toll booth, according to a footage caught by a drone. The incident saw cars parading the 35-lane G4 highway as people go back to Beijing following the three-day holiday.

The online video, which was captured and posted by the People's Daily, showed a shocking view of the traffic congestion, which was leading far past the eye's view.

The traffic is believed to have reached its full peak at 4 p.m. (local time) with local media reporting that people had to wait for up to three hours just to pass through the toll station in Beijing and Hebei.

Smog in northern China has also prompted the closure of several highways because of low visibility, stranding many vehicles on the road, according to the South China Morning Post.

The Metro reported that on the first day of 2017, the China meteorological administration issued an orange pollution alert after smog had spread out within 30 minutes in the entire Chinese capital.

Meanwhile, some motorists stuck in the traffic went online to express their sentiments. One citizen said that the congestion only added to the already-polluted region, according to an online post from QQ, an online website.

"High-speed charges can be prepaid online," read another comment. "We do not need pay points."
